What's the oldest piece of software you still use daily?
Not a nostalgia question. I'm curious which tools have survived ten or twenty years of replacement attempts, and what it is about them that nothing newer managed to improve on.
The obvious candidates are the boring ones — plain text files, grep, VLC, IrfanView, mutt, some Winamp fork. My guess at the pattern is that the survivors mostly do less, so there's less surface for a newer thing to beat them on. Hard to disrupt a tool whose entire job is "open the file, show the file."
But there are probably counterexamples — something big and complicated that just never got matched. Curious what people's are.
