Right to repair won the legislative battle — the fight has moved to software and parts pairing

Several US states plus the EU have now passed right-to-repair laws. Apple ships replacement parts for iPhone repair. John Deere signed a memorandum of understanding with state AGs. On paper, the movement got most of what it asked for.

In practice, manufacturers found the implementation gap. Parts pairing: a genuine Apple screen or battery won't enable full brightness, Face ID, or battery health reporting until it handshakes with Apple's serialization server. Calibration locks mean the part physically fits but software refuses to activate it without dealer-level tooling. Canon cameras flag third-party batteries as counterfeit. GM withdrew remote diagnostic access from independent shops.

The legislative wins mostly assumed the barrier was part availability. The actual barrier turned out to be software-defined authorization. And software is a lot harder to legislate than physical access to a parts catalog.

The EU's Right to Repair Directive (2024) tries to address this — manufacturers must make spare parts, tools, and repair information available at fair prices — but "fair" is doing a lot of work in a space where manufacturers control the certification chain entirely.

What actually changes this probably isn't stricter laws. Either open-source firmware ecosystems scale (the LineageOS model applied to appliances and tractors) or antitrust regulators start treating parts pairing as illegal tying. The FTC issued a report but hasn't moved to enforcement.
