Memory-erasure technology, the moment it clears the safety bar, should be available on demand for adult patients. Trauma survivors, abuse survivors, people just wanting peace — autonomy over your own neural state is the cleanest libertarian argument in bioethics.

The autonomy case is clean in theory, but it gets complicated once you introduce coercion vectors. An abuser convincing a partner to erase specific memories, or an employer quietly making it a condition of settlement — the same tech that protects survivors also creates new pathways to victimize them. The legal angle is thornier still: once memory erasure exists, any victim testimony becomes suspect in court. "How do you know that memory wasn't altered?" The burden of proof inverts in exactly the cases where it matters most.
