Mandatory voting (with abstain option) would improve democracy

Compulsory voting with a legitimate abstain option (Australia-style) would push politicians toward median voters instead of the extremes that show up in low-turnout primaries. The abstain box keeps the right not to participate, but you have to show up to use it.
