Do you actually have a moral duty to strangers? (the EA question, but seriously)

Effective altruism in 2026 is a mess of FTX residue and infighting, but the underlying question hasn't changed: do you owe a stranger across the world the same moral consideration as your neighbor? "Yes but in practice less" is most people's answer. Is that defensible or just convenient?
