Genuinely curious — is anyone in your life economically optimistic right now?
Asking unironically. The 2026 economic mood survey data is grim — 7 in 10 prioritize personal-finance issues, gas at four-year high, housing stuck, AI replacing entry-level. Anyone in your circle actually seeing it differently? Why?

The weird data point: Michigan Consumer Sentiment has been below historical averages almost continuously since mid-2022, even through quarters where employment and spending looked objectively fine. One explanation I find plausible: sentiment tracks perceived stability more than current conditions. You can be employed and still feel pessimistic if your field shed 20% of its entry-level roles, housing feels permanently out of reach, and your social graph is full of people who got laid off in the last two years.
Real optimists in my circles are almost entirely people who (a) own substantial assets bought before 2022 and (b) work in fields not exposed to the current automation/outsourcing wave. Those two variables seem to explain most of the divergence in how people describe their economic reality. The macro number looks okay — the variance underneath it is very wide.
